Western Florina - Prespes

Two fulfilling days at the lakes and the religious monuments around them
Western Florina - Prespes

Day 1

From the center of Florina, we head north, and within 10 minutes, we reach the historic Monastery of Agios Markos, situated at an altitude of 959 meters on Mount Varnountas. To get to Proti and the Church of Agios Georgios (1808), we can either traverse the natural landscape of the mountain range or return to Dimarchou Papathanasiou Street (25 and 20 minutes, respectively).

From there, in less than 10 minutes, we arrive at the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Kladorrachi, and shortly after, we reach Kato Kleines, home to the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos (1835). If time allows, a 15-minute detour takes us to Kratero and the impressive Church of Agios Nikolaos, from where we return to the Kleines junction.

We continue westward, reaching Akritas and the Church of Agios Nikolaos (1870) in just 10 minutes. Heading in the same direction, we find Pisoderi 20 minutes later, home to the Churches of the Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) and Agia Paraskevi. Before reaching Pisoderi, we pass near the Vigla Ski Center, while a short detour leads us to the Church of Agios Georgios (1873) in Alona.

From Pisoderi to Agios Germanos, the drive takes about 30 minutes, with breathtaking views of Mikri Prespa (Small Prespa Lake), which we follow along the shoreline until reaching the village’s historic church. Agios Germanos and Lemos offer dining and accommodation options for the night.

Day 2

We head towards the lakes, reaching the dam and the narrow land strip separating Mikri from Megali Prespa (Great Prespa Lake) within 10 minutes. Another 10-minute drive brings us to the picturesque Psarades, where we can take a boat ride or enjoy fresh fish from the lake.

Continuing along the shores of Megali Prespa, we visit the hermitages (Askitaria) and the region’s unique rock paintings. A 20-minute drive through the historic, forested western area of Prespa brings us back to Mikri Prespa, where we cross the stunning floating bridge to visit Agios Achilios, home to centuries-old Christian monuments and breathtaking views of the National Park.

From there, the return drive to Florina takes approximately one hour.
