Church of Agios Georgios in Proti

In Proti, Florina, the magnificent Church of Agios Georgios stands as the village’s cemetery church. Built in 1890 by the master builder Stoizdze, according to the dedicatory inscription on a limestone plaque, the church replaced an earlier one from 1808 that stood on the same site. As a three-aisled, timber-roofed basilica with a portico, it impresses with the pseudo-dome of its central nave and the sanctuary apse, featuring characteristic relieving arches and a lighting slit.
The church’s architecture reflects the local building tradition, with its gabled roof and simple decorative elements. In 1920, an independent, tower-like bell tower was added to the courtyard, harmoniously complementing the architectural ensemble. Beyond its religious function, the church is a significant historical monument, linking the present to the spiritual heritage of past centuries.
Today, the Church of Agios Georgios remains an active place of worship and a landmark for the community of Proti, while preserving its architectural value as a representative example of late Ottoman-era ecclesiastical art in Western Macedonia. The annual feast of Agios Georgios attracts numerous faithful, continuing a tradition that dates back to the 19th century.
