Church of Agios Georgios in Alona

500 meters from the village of Alona stands the historic Church of Agios Georgios, built in 1873 according to its dedicatory inscription. This three-aisled, timber-roofed basilica, featuring a distinctive western portico and a spacious narthex supported by sturdy piers, serves as an important religious and social center for the local community. The church’s architecture is striking, with its apse adorned with blind arches, a gabled roof with a quatrefoil opening and a wooden lantern, and a simple western façade characterized by three distinctive arches.
Inside, the church boasts remarkable frescoes in the sanctuary, an impressive painted wooden iconostasis, and historically significant icons. According to local legend, the church’s construction was inspired by a vision experienced by Neveni and was carried out by the village elder Nikolaos Kamperis. Interestingly, the same construction date (1873) appears on the Church of Agios Nikolaos in Akritas, suggesting a possible connection between the two buildings.
The church remains a vibrant center of religious and cultural tradition, especially during the annual three-day festival of Agios Georgios, when believers gather for processions and traditional dances. Today, it continues to blend its architectural significance with the deep-rooted faith of the local people, preserving its spiritual and social role intact.
