Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos (Genniseos Theotokou) in Kato Kleines

In Kato Kleines, Florina, the single-nave Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos (Genniseos Theotokou) stands prominently, built in 1835 during the tenure of Metropolitan Neophytos from Vlasti. According to local tradition, the church was erected on the site of an older one and follows a basilica-style layout with a semicircular apse, a two-story narthex-women’s gallery, and a distinctive wooden porch (hayati) on its western and southern sides. Its architecture blends elements of local construction techniques with the ecclesiastical traditions of the time.
The church’s interior decoration, completed in 1844, is the work of the iconographer Ioannis from Tyrnavos, as indicated by the dedicatory inscription above the southern entrance. The frescoes are of particular interest, featuring scenes of Hell and depictions of prophets on the octagonal pseudo-dome. Later additions include the external frescoes of the Archangels on the southern wall. In 1885, the outer porch and pseudo-dome were added to enhance the interior lighting.
Declared a preserved monument in 1995, the church continues to be a living center of religious and cultural heritage. Its architectural simplicity, rich fresco decoration, and historical significance make it one of the most important churches in the region, connecting the present with the historical memory of Kato Kleines.
