Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Genniseos Theotokou) in Zevgostasi

The Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Zevgostasi, Kastoria, is an important Byzantine monument dating back to the 11th century, with later additions and decorative modifications. Architecturally, it is a single-aisled, domed, cross-in-square church that was originally surrounded by a peristoon (covered portico) on its southern and western sides. However, this structure was demolished, resulting in the loss of many exterior frescoes.

The church’s interior features two layers of frescoes: The older layer (1432), covering the walls of the main church, has suffered damage from moisture, yet depictions of saints on the piers and scenes on the northern wall remain visible. The later layer (18th century), located in the narthex, is well-preserved, characterized by vivid colors and expressive figures.

According to local tradition, the church is one of three built by three sisters, wives of Byzantine generals. Today, the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15) is celebrated with significant religious and popular participation.

The church blends Byzantine architecture with post-Byzantine artistic influences. Its impressive wooden iconostasis and the depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child make it a remarkable religious and cultural landmark in the region.
