Holy Monastery of Panagia in Zidani

Monastery of Panagia in Zidani: From Ottoman Struggles to Spiritual Renewal
The Holy Monastery of Panagia in Zidani is one of the most significant religious and historical landmarks in the region of Kozani, with origins dating back to the 17th century, during the Ottoman occupation of Greece. Located in the Kamvounia Mountains, near the village of Mikrovalto, the monastery is closely linked to its most treasured relic — the icon of Panagia Zidaniotissa. This icon, silver-plated in 1755 by the artisan Theodoros from Kalarrytes of Ioannina, is believed to have been saved from destruction and transferred to the Zidani location in 1541, following the devastation of a Byzantine church in the town of Servia.
The monastery has endured many trials throughout its history. In 1854, it was burned down by the Ottomans in retaliation for the revolutionary actions of Theodoros Ziakas. During the German Occupation in World War II, it served as a resistance center, with monks assisting in the transport of ammunition. Despite repeated destruction, the monastery was rebuilt through the devotion of the faithful and the tireless efforts of Archimandrite Filaretos Bistis, who dedicated thirty years of his life to its preservation and restoration.
Today, the monastery functions as a women's convent, under the care of Nun Theoktisti since 2007. Its feast day is celebrated annually on September 8th, the Nativity of the Theotokos, with religious festivities and a large gathering of pilgrims. Additionally, on Thomas Sunday (the first Sunday after Easter), the icon of the Virgin Mary is carried in a solemn procession from the Church of Agios Konstantinos to Agios Nikolaow Church in Kozani, a tradition that began following the influenza pandemic of 1918.
The Holy Monastery of Panagia in Zidani remains a beacon of faith, history, and national resistance — a place that preserves the spiritual and cultural heritage of the region and stands as a testament to the resilience and devotion of the Greek people.
