West of Grevena

In the footsteps of Cosmas of Aetolia, through the Nature of mountainous Grevena
West of Grevena

From the town of Grevena, it takes about half an hour of driving to reach Agios Kosmas, where in 1777 Agios Kosmas of Aetolia taught, and according to local tradition, his tree still stands in the church courtyard. Since the total route requires approximately three and a half hours of driving, there is an option—if time allows—to visit the Church of the Archangels in Lochmi and the Church of the Holy Apostles in Agios Georgios on the way from Grevena to Agios Kosmas, which would add about half an hour to the total travel time.

From Agios Kosmas, we reach Kyparissi in 15 minutes, where we find the impressive three-aisled basilica of Agios Georgios, built in 1867. After a 20-minute drive, we arrive at the fairytale-like landscape of Chrysavgi, where waterfalls and a traditional watermill await to be photographed.

We are 40 minutes away from our next stop, Pentalofos, which is home to two very interesting churches: the Church of the patron saint Agios Athanasios (1816) and the Church of Agios Achilios (1742). We continue for another fifteen minutes through lush green scenery to the foothills of Prophet Elias (Profitis Ilias), where at an altitude of 1,021 meters lies the Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) Monastery (16th century), surrounded by the famous stone-mason villages of Anaselitsa.

After another half hour of driving, we arrive at the other monastery in the area, that of Agios Georgios in Eptachori, located at the foothills of Mount Taliaros, where we will enjoy the breathtaking view and visit the 17th-century monastery. Our return to Grevena takes about an hour, along a route that passes through picturesque villages and dense vegetation, offering many opportunities for rest, food, and especially short strolls in the fresh mountain air.
