Church of Agios Achilios in Pentalofos

The Church of Agios Achilios, located at the entrance of Pentalofos, Kozani, is an important religious and artistic monument of the region. Built in 1742 according to the foundation inscription, it is the oldest church in the village and a characteristic example of Byzantine and post-Byzantine architecture in Western Macedonia.
The interior of the church features remarkable 18th-century frescoes, the work of the folk painter Michail from the village of Chionades in Konitsa, known for his contribution to the local iconographic tradition. The frescoes, with a strong narrative style and vibrant color palette, depict religious scenes and iconographic representations, while the decorated women’s gallery particularly stands out.
The church, with its simple yet imposing structure, combines elements of local folk architecture with the spiritual heritage of Epirus. Today, it serves as a place of worship and a cultural reference point for the residents of Pentalofos, keeping the village’s connection to its history and tradition alive.
