Buchtaria and Nochtaria of Mikrovalto

The Bucharia and Nochtaria of Mikrovalto in Kozani are two of the most impressive geological phenomena in Greece, attracting visitors with their unique formations. They are located in the area of the Kozani – Grebneva Geopark, between the settlements of Mikrovalto , Tranovouto, and Livadero, and belong to the Kamvounia mountain range. These natural monuments provide a one-of-a-kind destination for geology and nature enthusiasts.

The Bucharia, reaching up to 7 meters in height, are distinctive reddish formations that resemble giant "stone mushrooms." They were created about 70,000 years ago through soil erosion and consist of sand, marl, and pebbles, with their tops covered by schist. These impressive formations give the area an exceptionally unique atmosphere.

The nearby Nochtaria create an equally striking scene. With pyramidal conical shapes that resemble the landscapes of Cappadocia, they present a lesser-known but equally enchanting sight. Although they resemble the Bucharia, they do not have the characteristic "stone umbrella" and are more numerous.

The area, rich in legends and folk beliefs, offers an unparalleled experience. Access is easy from Mikrovalto , about 40 minutes from Kozani, and the view at sunset is captivating.
