Church of Agios Nikolaos in Perivoli

The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, located near the village of Perivoli, is an important post-Byzantine monument in Western Macedonia. The church of Agios Nikolaos, which served as the katholikon of the monastery, was built in 1803, likely on the site of an earlier parish church. The monastery is situated on a forested slope, next to a tributary of the Aliakmonas River, and is a remarkable example of Byzantine architecture. The church has a cross-in-square design with a dome and is divided into four sections with a spacious narthex to the west. The dome is supported by four columns and piers and has an octagonal drum with shallow apses.
The masonry of the church is constructed using dressed pumice stones and limestone, while the roof is covered with schist plates. Inside, the church features a wooden iconostasis with rich decorative motifs, including plant and animal patterns, as well as scenes from the Twelve Feasts and the Passion of Christ. The restoration of the monastery took place after the roof collapsed in 1997, with stabilization and enhancement completed by 2000.
