Metropolitan Church of Agios Panteleimon in Florina
The Metropolitan Church of Agios Panteleimon, the patron saint of Florina, is an impressive five-aisled basilica with a dome, and a significant religious and architectural landmark of the city. Built entirely of reinforced concrete and clad with hewn stone, the church stands out for its grand dimensions (31m × 19.5m × 25m height). The interior structure of the church is based on 14 columns that divide the aisles, while the striking dome is supported by four pillars and decorated with arches and lunettes.
The exterior of the church is distinguished by two tall bell towers (23m in height) and the magnificent mosaic on the western pediment, depicting Christ with his disciples. The interior is adorned with mosaic floors and frescoes by Dimitrios Ritsos, which create a unique atmosphere of religious reverence.
The church, completed in 1972 on the site of an older building, was consecrated on July 27, the feast day of Agios Panteleimon. Today, it serves as a place of worship and a cultural symbol of Florina, combining modern architecture with the tradition of the Orthodox Church. Its imposing presence and artistic value make it one of the most impressive churches in northern Greece.
