Church of Agios Georgios in Aetos

In Aetos, Amyntaio, the historic Church of Agios Georgios stands as a prominent landmark, built in 1832 as the village’s first church and now serving as the spiritual hub of the parish. This three-aisled basilica, with its imposing tall bell tower and intricate wooden iconostasis, is a significant religious and historical monument in the region.
The church reflects the identity of the community through the trials of history. During the Macedonian Struggle, when attempts were made to convert it into a Bulgarian religious center, the Greek-minded residents preserved its Greek character through a symbolic act during a fellow villager’s funeral. This event established the church as a symbol of resilience and faith.
Today, the Church of Agios Georgios remains a vibrant place of worship and a historical landmark, combining its architectural value with popular devotion. The annual feast of the saint (April 23) gathers the residents, continuing a tradition that dates back to the 19th century and continues to unite the community of Aetos.
