Church of Profitis Ilias in Kastoria

The Church of Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elias) in Kastoria is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Built after World War II on the hill of Agios Athanasios, it offers panoramic views of the lake and the Kastoria peninsula. Prophet Elias, the patron saint of furriers, is highly revered in the region, with many villages in the area having churches dedicated to his name.

Surrounding the church is the Prophet Elias Grove, a recreational area with a café, restaurant, playground, basketball courts, and a small park featuring deer and peacocks. A path from the grove leads to the top of Agios Athanasios hill, where the view of the city’s southern shoreline becomes even more breathtaking. Along the way lies the Mountain Theater, an open-air amphitheater inspired by ancient Greek architecture. Thanks to its elevated location and excellent acoustics, it offers a magical setting for cultural events held there during the summer months.
